A press conference was held on Monday 2nd October by the two medics, Dr. Ali al-Ekri and Dr. Saeed al-Samahiji and al-Wefaq's head of Liberties and Human Rights, Sayed Hadi al-Musawi. The conference highlighted the Cassation Court's decision to uphold the harsh verdicts of the Higher Appellate Court against nine medics.
Sayed Hadi al-Musawi stated that the verdicts are politicized and confessions were taken under torture. "The Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) has confirmed this, and the Bahraini constitution prohibits torture and considers confessions taken under as void", he said. The Cassation Court has issued a decision to refuse the medics' appeals. Sayed Hadi mentioned that torture in police custody was not only to obtain false confessions, but also for revenge and amusement.
"The violations take place even after Bahrain pledged to implement recommendations".
"We are talking about a series of violations that started when 'National Safety Law'/(SoE) was implemented, and are ongoing, whether before or after the BICI and UPR recommendations".
Sayed Hadi also pointed out that Human Rights Watch described the decision is an insult to human rights, and Foreign Policy said that "The case has drawn international criticism over Bahrain's questionable efforts at political reform".
Dr. Ali al-Ekri, said that he is not surprised by the court's decision to reject the final appeals he and his colleagues presented. He said this decision was taken to save-face the authority and to avoid interceptions of those who had believed the fabricated accusations against the medics.
He declared that he and his colleagues are being punished for expressing their opinions and practicing their right to demonstrate, and therefore it is absolutely shameful for the state media to go on with its fabricated stories, especially that the Public Prosecution did not present any evidence against them.
" We practiced our right to protest for the dismissal of the Minister (of Health), we opposed to his breach of medical neutrality.", al-Ekri Said.
Dr. Al-Samahiji stated that they intend to tell the world through this press conference that this regime uses the Judiciary and sham trials for political purposes. He said, "We know that the Ministry of Justice and the courts are a part of this regime."
" All civilized countries give great respect to the civil society. We, as medics, expected unjust sentences but we are not afraid and we are ready to sacrifice for the freedom of our people who have started their struggle since the twenties."
"We believe that the regime intends to use the medics card in any possible political dialogue.", he declared. Al-Samahiji said that all possibilities are relevant, even arrests.
This was the last time both medics were seen on media before the regime arrested them on Tuesday early morning.
